Ahlgrens Bilar Salty Licorice

The Ahlgren’s Bilar Saltlakrits is delicious and perfectly sweet. Each bright yellow bag is labelled with the text “Bilar” – a very familiar design to all Swedes and with its fun car-shaped contents it truly speaks to your inner child. Each car is coated with a layer of salt lakrits (salty licorice) that sits on top of licorice flavoured candy. The experience is powerful and long lasting, thanks to these chewy sweets. If you ask a Swede about Ahlgren’s Bilar (both the original and salty licorice) s/he will not only know what it is but call it a personal favourite of theirs.

Ahlgren’s Bilar has been around for a whopping 60 years now and have a rather unique story. Many years’ ago, Ahlgren’s candy factory in Gävle began working on a new marshmallow to be produced. The year was 1953, and their project had taken a rather unexpected turn – instead of marshmallows the product that came out was a small, slightly car shaped treat that tasted fantastic! The manufacturers’ decided to keep this new car and even maintained the different colours of green, white and pink. A few years later its brothers’ and sisters’ were born, and now there are many types to choose from such as the saltlakrits.
